Q-1 What is a Brazilian Butt Lift?
A- The Brazilian butt lift is a type of butt augmentation procedure which results in a youthful, prominent, perky buttocks and a more sensual body profile. People of all ages are having the buttock lift also known as fat grafting to the buttocks.
Q-2 How is the Brazilian butt lift augmentation perform?
A- A board certified plastic surgeon removes fat from selected areas of your body, purifies the fat and then re-injects selected donor fat cells into your buttocks. The procedure is designed to fill the upper quadrant of the buttocks so that the butt appears lifted and perky. The resulting effect is that the woman appears more attractive and sensuous.
The buttock is first contoured by performing liposuction in the areas around the buttocks to make the gluteus area stand out more. Common areas liposuctioned include the lower back – directly above the butt – the stomach, and the thighs. Note that in many cases the liposuction of just the rear thighs, lower back and flanks will give the gluteus area a more rounded, prominent and attractive look.
The fat suctioned from these areas is carefully processed and purified such that only a fraction of the donor fat removed will qualify for re-injection to the buttocks. After liposuction, the board certified plastic surgeon carefully purifies the fat so that only the best donor fat cells are re-injected back into your buttocks for augmentation. The fat is placed or transferred to the buttocks with special cannulas.
Q-3 What are the advantages of using your own fat?
A- No implants needed (no foreign body), Low rate of infection, Improved contour to the areas where the fat was harvested from; Minimal incisions required.
Q-4 Brazilian butt lift – How is this different from a regular butt lift?
A- Yes, Brazilian butt lift is different in the way the procedure is performed. There are several ways to improve the appearance of the buttock and gluteal regions. In the past, surgeons have used butt implants (regular butt lift), which are solid firm silicone pieces. These implants carried the risk of extrusion (coming out of the incision), infection, and displacement. Also, depending on how they were inserted, they could affect the muscles of the butt, as well.
Q-5 What type of women are most likely to benefit from Brazilian butt lift?
A- Brazilian Butt is a procedure that provides great results for all types of women and men, but those whose waist is narrower with prominent hips seem to get better results.
Q-6 If I am more concerned with increasing the size of my buttocks, can I have butt implants instead?
A- There are two different ways to enlarge your buttocks:
1) Brazilian Butt Lift: Fat injections or fat transfer to the buttocks
2) Butt Implants: Insertion of silicone implants
It is recommended butt implants over the Brazilian butt lift ONLY IF you are really tiny and have no body fat stored in your abdomen. If you have enough donor fat, most surgeons prefer to augment the butt using fat injections-the Brazilian butt lift. They believe that this method results in the most natural and sensual look for the buttock area. Doctors usually recommend butt implants when the patient is very tiny with no fat in your stomach or flank area. The fat transfer method has a lower risk of infection compared to the butt implant procedure.
An additional benefit of this fat injection method is that you not only get a more shapely buttock, but the area liposuctioned is now much leaner, giving your profile a more sensuous look. Most surgeons prefer the Brazilian butt lift, as the combination of liposuction and fat injections produces the most attractive and natural profile.
Q-7 Besides giving a big Butt what else is there to know about the Brazilian butt lift or Brazilian butt augmentation?
A- The Brazilian butt lifts have come to stay and it is not only about big butts. It continues to amaze doctors and patients how good this procedure is. It is perfectly suited to how the body handles fat, and the different components of the procedure enhance each other. Although the procedure is called Brazilian Butt Lift, what makes it great is the way the love handles are reshaped and create a nice curve between the butt and the waist.
The most important thing in this procedure is not to get the “biggest butt”, but to create the best looking waist-hips-butt area. When patients bring in pictures of what they want to look like, invariably the models shown have small waists and a curvy transition between the lower back and butt.
The butt doesn’t have to be that large as long as that transition area has a nice looking curve. As a matter of fact, we have several patients from years past who look like they had a butt augmentation when all they had was liposuction to the flanks and thighs. The increased contrast between the lower back and the buttock itself, as well as the curvy transition between them, enhance the appearance of the buttock. If you then augment the buttock with fat taken from the love handles area, the results can be spectacular.
Q-8 How is the fat injected into the buttocks?
A- The buttock is first contoured by performing liposuction in the areas around the buttocks to make them stand out more. Common areas liposuctioned include the back- directly above the butt, the stomach, and the thighs. Note that even the liposuction alone will give your lower body a more attractive look.
The fat suctioned from these areas is carefully processed and purified such that only a fraction of the donor fat removed will qualify for re-injection to the buttocks. In order to get enough qualified fat, surgeons must liposuction at least 2 areas of the body. After liposuction, doctors carefully purify the fat so that only the best donor fat cells are re-injected back into your buttocks for augmentation. The fat is placed or transferred to the buttocks with special cannulas.
Doctors inject small amounts of purified fat into different areas of the buttocks and at various depths so that the patient will get the highest permanent absorption rate. Thus, the procedure usually involves ‘hundreds’ of micro fat injections. Correct injection methods are essential to achieve a uniform, smooth, natural appearance to the buttocks.
Q- 9 Who is a candidate for Brazilian Butt Lift?
A- Men and women who have experienced a loss of skin elasticity of the buttock areas,
want more prominent buttocks, a more sensual body profile or are self-conscious about their lower body appearance.
Q-10 How do I know if I am a candidate for butt augmentation through fat transfer?
A- Usually, if a patient is overweight or wears an eight to 12 dress size, she is probably best suited for transfer and perhaps some liposuction. Thin patients who wear size two to four dresses are usually not good candidates for fat transfer because they do not have any fat to spare
Q-11 Can I combine the Brazilian butt lift along with any other surgeries?
A- Yes, you can, Tummy tucks, breast lift, breast augmentation, Rhinoplasty, full body liposculture, thigh lift, arm lift and eyelid surgery are some of the many cosmetic surgical procedures you can combine with Brazilian Butt Lift. See combinations.
Remember the risks inherent in any surgery. You may experience tightness (a welcome change) and discomfort, especially if you have multiple procedures. Recovery time will probably be longer than the normal two to three weeks you spend recuperating after buttock augmentation. However, you may decide the risk is worth having the smooth and sexy backside you see on the beaches in Rio.
Q-12 What does buttocks augmentation with fat grafting (Brazilian butt lift) do?
A-
Q-13 What does buttocks augmentation with cohesive silicone gel implants do?
A-
Q-14 How does the surgery procedure differs? Buttock augmentation with fat grafting Vs. buttocks augmentation with cohesive silicone gel implants?
A- A)Microfat Grafting a.k.a Brazilian butt lift
By means of a cannula that is thinner than the ones used for conventional liposculpture, the surgeon removes the fat from certain areas of the body, such as the lower back, abdomen, waist and hips. He then purifies the fat collected and injects it on the buttocks drop by drop, very close to the blood vessels to be sure that the injected fat will have adequate blood supply.
B) Silicone implants
The surgeon makes a small incision of 2 or 3 inches (5 cm or 7 cm) between the buttocks, right inside the midline. Through this incision, the doctor makes a pocket inside each buttock and places the cohesive silicone gel implants inside each one of them. There are two possible locations for the implants; the location will be decided according to each patien’s needs.
· Submuscular: If you need to enhance the upper part of the buttocks and the lower part has a good volume (this is what most frequently happens), the implants will be located beneath the buttock muscle (gluteus maximums) approximately where jean pockets would be.
· Subfascial: If you need to enhance the lower part of the buttocks and the upper part has a good volume, the implants will be located between the buttock muscle and its fascia (fascia or aponeurosis is the tissue that covers the muscle).
Q-15 What about Anesthesia for this type of procedure?
A- Anesthesia may be local, epidural, or general, it will depend on what you and your surgeon decides is best for you.
Q-16 Will buttocks augmentation surgery help me with my sagging skin problem?
A- Buttock augmentation surgery does not lift sagging skin. If your problem is the excess skin, we recommend that you read below the section devoted to buttock lift surgery.
Q-17 What about the results for Brazilian butt lift (fat grafting)? Will it last?
A- Usually, buttocks augmentation with fat grafting produces permanent and satisfactory results. You may be praised and criticized, but the most important thing is to feel satisfied with your own body, to be able to wear the clothes you like, in whatever way you may want to wear them, and to like what you see when you look at yourself in the mirror. That is the goal of surgery. If it can be achieved, as it happens in most cases, we may talk about success.
Q-18 How long do the fat injections last?
A- If the donor fat is properly harvested and processed, a large percentage of fat cells will survive the crucial period until they receive blood supply. Once this happens these fat cells remain for the patient’s lifetime. At about a month after surgery, the improvement you see will be long term.
Q-19 the liposuction techniques used in this procedure different than regular liposuction?
A- Yes, the fat is harvested using specialized liposuction techniques called Lipo-Selection. A low pressure aspiration system is used to minimize damage to fat cells as they are being extracted. Regular liposuction traumatizes fat cells too much. Only the correct type of liposuction will yield fat cells that will result in a permanent lifetime result.
Q-20 Let me make sure about this: Is Brazilian butt lift the same as fat grafting or fat transfer?
A- Yes. Brazilian butt lift is Fat injections or fat grafting/transfer as it’s sometimes known. It takes fat from the lower back, the hips or the “love handles.” Once the fat is prepared, fat cells are injected into the peaks of the buttocks, muscle layer by muscle layer, where it will thrive with a good blood supply.
Q-21 Are there advantages of one method of butt augmentation over the other?
A- Yes, the Brazilian butt lift has advantages over Buttock Implants. The combination of liposuction and fat injection results in the most natural and sensual body profile.
Q-22 Is the Brazilian butt lift procedure safe?
A- The Brazilian butt lift is a well tolerated procedure. It is no more risky than liposuction, which is the most common plastic surgical procedure.
Q-23 How popular is the Brazilian butt lift procedure?
A- According to the ASPS (American Society of Plastic Surgeons), the butt lift procedure is the fastest growing cosmetic procedure, as the number of butt lifts performed grew by 49% in 2008, compared to 2007.
Q-24 If I don’t have enough donor fat are there any other surgical options to enhance my buttocks?
A- Some small thin women do not have enough fat on their body in order to perform the Brazilian butt lift procedure. Thus, if a woman does not have enough donor fat, the other option would be butt augmentation with silicon implants. For butt implants, a small incision is made in the crack between the buttock cheeks. The butt implants are then carefully placed in the tissues of the buttock avoiding the areas where important nerves lie. When the incision heals it is difficult to detect. The result is a round and prominent butt.
Insertion of the implants will fill out the upper and outer parts of the buttock. It is more difficult to fill out the lower part of the buttocks. The implants cannot be placed in this region because of the risk of nerve damage. To fill out the lower part of the buttocks, fat injection is used. Sometimes both techniques can be used.
GENERAL RECOVERY INFORMATION FOR MOST PROCEDURES ON THIS 100 FAQ’S:
Q- 25 How long does it take for a Brazilian butt lift recovery?
A- Most patients say that there is very little overall discomfort, which is easily handled by painkillers. Patients are able to sit shortly (10 days) after buttock augmentation surgery and typically return to work within a week. You will need to wear a compression garment (girdle) for up to 2 months and you can resume regular exercise after 20 days. Postoperative massage and ultrasound treatments can alleviate the minor pain and help you recover faster. Your results will be evident after 6-8 weeks.
Q-26 For this kind of procedures (buttock augmentation by fat grafting or silicone implant ) do I have to stay in the hospital?
A- No hospitalization is needed; both procedures are done on an outpatient basis. You will be able to leave 4 or 6 hours after the surgery.
Q-27 When can I go back to work after the Brazilian butt lift procedure?
A- Following the butt augmentation procedure, you must not sit directly on your buttocks for 10 days. Most people can return to work in 2 weeks, provided you do only a minimum amount of sitting. You must wear a special garment (to control swelling) for two months. There may be a small amount of swelling for up to 6 weeks. However, you should be able to resume all normal activities at 2 weeks post op.
A- It is critical that you review post-procedure care with your doctor. Following his/her instructions carefully will help ensure you have a speedy, healthy recovery. Also keep in mind that:
Q- 29 How can I sleep after the buttock implant or the Brazilian butt lift procedure?
A- For the first two weeks you should sleep on your stomach and not on your back. During this time you should avoid putting direct pressure on your buttock. If you have to sit, use a very soft cushion. From week three until six you should also sit on cushions when sitting for prolonged periods.
Q- 30 Will I experience any nauseas during the buttock implant recovery process?
A- Yes, it may occur. Make sure that you have all your medications, cold drinks, and towels at your bedside. Most people are nauseated during the first 24-48 hours. Take a nausea pill one hour before taking your pain pills or antibiotics. While it is good to drink plenty of liquids, refrain from drinking plain water or acidic fruit juices as they will make you more nauseated.
Q-31 Will I experience any numbness in the surgical areas?
A- Yes. All surgical areas may stay numb for four to eight weeks and in some rare cases up to 6 months. Lymphatic Massages will help to desensitize your skin in order to avoid hypersensitivity or skin irritation.
Q-32 After the buttock implant procedure is done is it normal some blood to drip from the incisions?
A- Do not be alarmed when blood-tinged tumescent fluid oozes from the sites of fat harvest or liposuction. This is a normal result of liposuction and usually stops during the second week. The plastic surgeon leaves these tiny incisions exposed so that the liquid spills out, thereby minimizing bruising. You should cover your bed to avoid staining from this fluid. There should not be any drainage from the incision where the implant has been placed. If this happens, please inform your doctor.
Q-33 What about swelling? Should I expect any?
A- Yes. There will be some swelling and some minimal bruising which dissipates five to eight weeks following surgery.
Q-34 Am I going to wear any special garment after the butt implant or fat injection procedures?
A- Yes. Following liposuction, fat injection, or implant placement, you are placed in a support garment (girgle). Do not remove this until your doctor instructs you to do so. Support garments should be worn 24 hours a day for two months, and then during the daytime for the next three weeks. This will help to reduce swelling, and to help shrink the skin, and to shape the buttock area.
Q-35 Will I be allowed to remove the garments for showering after surgery?
A- Usually the patient removes their garment and takes a shower after the second day.
Q-36 When I take shower what should I do? Can I use some moisturizing lotion in the wounded areas?
A- The first time that you remove your garment you will feel like you are going to faint. This is normal. Have someone with you at that time. After your first shower you need to apply Vaseline or heavy lotion all over liposuctioned areas and the buttock skin to elevate the itchiness that is caused by the skin-drying effects of liposuction. This is a good time for you to start massaging the fat injection areas. You should massage these areas softly about three times a day for about six weeks. Sometimes, patients whose skin was not firm and elastic will experience dimpling of the skin. This can be eliminated or minimized by massaging and early exercise. If you have implants don’t get the incision wet until instructed by your surgeon.
Q-37 What are others general care that I should learn on recovery?
A- The most important way that a person can contribute to having a great result is by being meticulous about conducting massage.
You need to meticulously clean your buttock implant incision in the shower and then after with alcohol after each bowl movement, or at least once daily for the first two weeks after surgery.
Patients will also feel a bruise-like or muscle cramp-like pain, particularly in the areas where fat was removed, and which will be addressed through a prescription from your surgeon.
Antibiotics are prescribed to reduce the risk of infection.
It is good to ambulate after surgery in order to prevent stagnation of blood in your legs and to reduce the chance of developing blood clots.
A- Most patients can resume normal activities within two weeks after buttock implant placement, or within one week after fat grafting. After this time you can start gentle walking but must refrain from jogging or doing heavy physical activity or exercising until six weeks after surgery. You can do upper body exercising after three weeks. Most patients return to work within a week after fat grafting and after two weeks from buttock implant placement.
A- Usually, fat injection is much less painful that buttock augmentation with implants. Fat injection feels mostly like a bad bruise while implant placement feels like a bad muscle cramp. These pains are manageable with prescribed medication.
A- Fat Injection does not hinder your ability to have sexual relations. However, you should resume sexual activity only as you feel comfortable in doing so. The desire to resume having sex varies from patient to patient. On the other hand, with buttock implant placement you should avoid having any strenuous sex for about six weeks after surgery.
Q-41 When will I be able to resume my usual activities around and outside the house?
A- Most patients are fit to resume every operation in the day-to-day lives after two weeks.

Q-42 Who Are The Best Candidates for Buttock Implants?
A- The buttocks region has proven to be an area of struggle for many people. It is not easily enlarged or shaped by weight training and diet. If enlargement of the buttock is ones goal, there are a variety of different size and shape buttock implants from which to choose. The decision for the shape and size of the buttock implants is made depending on each person’s individual desires and on their general body build. In general, the best candidates for buttock augmentation are:
The above is only a partial list of the criteria that your surgeon will consider in determining whether or not this procedure is appropriate for you. Be sure to ask your surgeon if he/she considers you an ideal candidate for buttock implants.
Q-43 How is the procedure and recovery time for buttock implants?
A- Buttock implants are made of silicone as are breast implants, but they differ in consistency. Breast implants are soft and fluid filled, while the buttock implants are soft but made of a solid silicone. Under general anesthesia, the silicone implants are placed into each buttock area through a single incision overlying the tailbone. The buttock implants are positioned to look as natural as possible for the optimal cosmetic effect.
With the patient asleep under general anesthesia, a two to three inch incision is made between the buttocks in the midline. Through this incision the buttock muscle, or gluteus maximus, is lifted up and a pocket is made just large enough for the implant. The buttock implant is inserted into its pocket. The opposite side is then completed. Both sides are carefully examined in order to assure that the results look natural and symmetric. Dissolvable stitches are used to close the incision. A compression bandage is placed around the buttocks to help reduce discomfort and swelling. The taped dressing that is applied during surgery to provide compression and support is usually removed three to four days following surgery. At this time the patient can take showers and begin to move around more normally. The results can be seen immediately but the buttocks look more natural and become softer as the muscle stretches during the several months after surgery.
Q-44 What can I expect from buttock implants?
A- There is generally very little swelling and bruising after buttock augmentation so the results may be seen very soon after surgery. Unfortunately since this is an area of the body that is required for walking, sitting, and many other movements, patients might experience greater pain during the recovery period than other common cosmetic surgery procedures and the recovery time is usually longer. Pain medications typically are prescribed to help with the discomfort, but after approximately 5-7 days the patient is able to be up and about; moving, walking, and sitting more comfortably. Full physical activities are usually permitted after 20 days after surgery. It is important to take the medication prescribed to you by your doctor. Someone will need to drive you home, and you may need assistance at home over the next couple of days. Expect to be in bed for the next 24 hours following surgery.
Q-45 What is the recommended age for buttock implant or Brazilian butt lift?
A- Anyone over 18.
Q- 46 What is the average time of buttock implant surgery?
A- The average surgery in most patients goes smooth and usually takes from 1-2 hours.
Q- 47 How long do I have to stay in the hospital after the procedure (buttock implant) is done?
A- It is better recommended for a patient to remain up to 24H under medical surveillance; however some choose to go home even in the same day considering 98% of surgeries have no complication at all.
A- Buttock augmentation stretches the tissues, and can be painful. This is especially true when the implants are placed under the muscle. The pain is greatest within the first 48 hours, but improves with each day and is somewhat relieved by pain medications. In spite of the initial discomfort, most women report that they are very satisfied with the results of the surgery.
When you wake up you will feel tired, sore, and stiff. It is important to take the medication prescribed to you by your doctor. Your surgeon may prescribe an antibiotic and an anti-inflammatory medication to be taken after your buttock implant surgery. It is a good idea to have these prescriptions filled beforehand.
Q- 49 What about scars on buttock implant procedures? How am I going to handle the scars?
A- Your concerns with scars will be minimum; they are almost imperceptible because the scar is located between the buttocks.
Q- 50 I still need more clarification on the differences between buttock augmentation with implants Vs. fat injection?
A- If you are considering undergo any of these procedures you must know what they are really about. Buttock augmentation with implants uses silicone implant which is inserted under each buttock muscle. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes about two hours. With buttock enhancement by fat injection, gentle liposuction is used to remove fat cells from donor sites, such as the thighs, abdomen, back or hips. The removed cells are then injected into the buttocks. This procedure provides for a body sculpting effect by reducing fat in areas where it is unwanted.
Q- 51 What are the benefits for buttock augmentation with implants? And whom is it preferred to?
A- This is the preferred procedure for patients who do not have excess fat stores or whose excess fat is not sufficient to allow for buttock enhancement by fat injection. It is also a good procedure for those who want to make extreme modifications to both the size and shape of their buttocks.
Benefits for this procedure include:
Q-52 And what about the benefits for buttock enhancement by fat injections?
A- Buttock enhancement through fat injection is a less invasive procedure that allows you resume some activities in about 4 days and resume full activity in 20 days.
Benefits of this procedure include:
Q-53 Which procedure (buttock implant Vs. fat injection) will heal first?
A- Like we said above if your body has concentrated areas of fat that could be used for grafting the buttocks this procedure will give you the benefit of a speedy recovery. Buttock enhancement through fat injection is a less invasive procedure that allows you resume some activities in about 4 days and resume full activity in 2 weeks.
Q-54 How the fat is injected in my buttocks?
A- The fat is injected through two very small incisions and is carefully layered through tunnels throughout the buttocks.
Q- 55 How many times do I need to repeat the buttock fat grafting (fat injections) procedure?
A- In 30% to 35% of the patients a repeat fat grafting is necessary because of significant absorption of fat. However, it is unlikely that further fat grafting beyond the second treatment will be necessary. An important consideration for buttock fat grafting is the availability of extra fat in different parts of the body. While fat is usually in abundance, there are patients in whom there is no extra fat available. In these patients buttock augmentation with fat is obviously not feasible.
Q-56 Can buttock implant be further enhance with liposuction?
A- Yes. Buttocks implant can also be further enhance when combined with fat grafting. This involves removal of fat from other areas of the body and transferred into the buttock region around the implants. Liposuction is usually performed to remove fat from other areas.
Q-57 How can I Prepare for Buttock Augmentation procedure?
A- The plastic surgeon will provide very specific instructions prior to surgery so you will have an optimal and safe experience. This includes what medications to avoid to prevent excessive bleeding and bruising, required medical exams, what to eat and drink prior to surgery, and the prescription of an anti-nausea pill to take on the morning of the surgery. In all cases, you will be asked to have a reliable friend or family member take you home after the surgery, as you will not be allowed to drive.
If you are going to have buttock implants you are not allowed to sit on your buttocks for more than a few minutes at a time during, the first two weeks. This means no driving during this period. From the third to sixth week after surgery, you can only sit on soft pillows and cushions. Make sure that you have enough pillows and cushions to help you during this period.
Because the incision is located in the buttock crease, it needs to be meticulously cleaned in the shower at least once daily and every time after bowel movement, during the first two weeks. Therefore, make preparations for this.
Q-58 What are the pre-operative instructions I should observe for buttock implants?
A-
A- Like any non-cosmetic major surgery, buttock augmentation has potential risks and complications. Therefore, you should consider it as seriously as you would any major surgery. Also note that augmentation with implants carries a much higher rate of complications as compared to fat injections.
A- Changes in Skin Sensation: This is a normal consequence that occurs in everyone to a different extent. You may experience “paresthesia,” which is an altered sensation at the site of the liposuction. This may either be in the form of an increased sensitivity (pain) in the area, or the loss of any feeling (numbness) in the area. This sensation is permanent in very rare cases. However, in almost all patients it goes away within the first two to four months after surgery. Massaging the area of liposuction helps increase circulation, and facilitates return of normal skin sensation.
Swelling: This is also a normal occurrence that occurs in every patient. Compression garments and post-operative massage help to minimize this, as well as reducing its duration to less than two months.
Bruising: There will be bruising in many areas that are liposuctioned or grafted, as well as in adjacent or dependent areas. For example, you will also note bruising and swelling in the back of your thighs and your genitalia. This is not because these areas are actually liposuctioned. However, bruises usually move downward due to gravity, and can thus temporarily accumulate in the genitalia. Some bruising can last a long time or even lead to permanent skin pigmentation. Sun tanning immediately after surgery can cause these bruises to become permanent skin stains.
Skin Irregularities or Dimples: The areas that are injected with fat can develop contour irregularities, including bumps and dimples depending on your skin elasticity and the extent of fat injection. Usually, post-operative massage helps to smooth these areas.
Asymmetry: No two halves of the body are identical. Therefore, following buttock augmentation, there may appear to be very slight differences between the contour and size of the two sides. Scoliosis or other spine derangements can magnify body asymmetry.
Muscle Spasm: It is very common to get temporary muscle spasm or cramps in the buttock muscles. This usually resolves quickly by itself or can be helped by gentle heat and massage.
Pain and Discomfort: You should expect to have pain or discomfort similar to a feeling of having worked out too hard. Some of this may feel like a stabbing pain in the augmented areas, and in adjacent areas. This can usually be managed by pain medications, and it generally lasts for a few weeks. Rarely, and in people with Fibromyalgia, or other forms of chronic pain syndrome, there can be a worsening of the patient’s baseline pain.
Depression, emotional, or sexual changes: There have been reported incidents of post-liposculpture depression similar to postpartum depression. While this is usually temporary, patients need to address it with their physician.
Seroma or fluid collection: After fat injection or implant placement, there may be a pooling of serum, the straw colored liquid from your blood, in the buttock areas. Your surgeon can alleviate these by draining them with a small needle in an office procedure.
Fat Absorption and Sclerosis: Approximately 30% of the injected fat does not survive and gets absorbed. If this happens unevenly, there could be areas were you feel or see dimples or dents. Also, in the areas of fat absorption scarring can occur which makes the tissue feel hard. Gentle massage over the buttock area helps even out and smoothen these areas during the recovery phase.
Q-61 Is there any major risk within buttock implant procedures?
A- There are some rare and severe complications reported in the cosmetic surgery world. They are:
Infection: Infection may happen after any surgery and may rarely occur after liposculpture. The rate of infection increases with an increase in the amount of injected fat, as the risk of Seroma formation increases; but the overall rate still remains very low due to routine use of peri-operative antibiotics. There have been reports of a significantly increased risk of infection with the use of buttock implants, which can be as high as 25-30%. This is most likely due to the vicinity of the incision to the rectum. If a mild infection develops it might be treated with antibiotics. Otherwise, the implant has to be removed, and the wound has to be left open for it to close gradually, which can take several weeks. Extremely rarely, infections may be serious or life threatening such as in cases of necrotizing fasciaitis (bacteria that eat away at the tissue) or with toxic shock syndrome, a serious, sometimes fatal infection caused by a bacteria, that is associated with surgery.
Embolism: This is also extremely rare and is lessened by early postoperative mobility so that blood does not have time to become stagnant in calf muscles. Fat embolism may occur when fat is loosened and enters the blood through blood vessels ruptured (broken) during liposuction. Pieces of fat get trapped in the blood vessels, gather in the lungs, or travel to the brain. The signs of pulmonary emboli (fat clots in the lungs) may be shortness of breath or difficulty breathing. If you have the signs or symptoms of fat emboli after liposuction, it is important for you to seek emergency medical care at once. Fat embolism may cause permanent disability or, in some cases, be fatal.
Visceral Perforations (puncture wounds in the organs): During liposuction or fat injection the physician is unable to see where the cannula, or probe, is. It is possible to puncture or damage internal organs during this procedure. When organs are damaged, surgery may be required to repair them. Visceral perforations may also be fatal.
Skin Necrosis (skin death): The skin above the fat grafted area or at the site of stab wound incisions may become necrotic or “die.” When this happens, skin may change color and be sloughed (fall) off. Large areas of skin necrosis may become infected with bacteria or microorganisms.
Implant Protrusion: It is possible for the buttock implants to migrate and gradually extrude through the incision or other areas of the buttock skin. The incidence of this increase if there is Seroma, Hematoma, or Infection. Also, excessive pressure over the implants during the early period of healing can increases the risk of implant protrusion.
Nerve Injury: Buttock implants can either press upon or migrate onto the sciatic nerve which travels in the buttock region. This can potentially cause impingement or injury to the nerve. Treatment may include removal of the implants.
Fluid Imbalance: Fat tissue, which contains a lot of liquid, is removed during liposuction. Also, physicians may inject large amounts of fluids during liposuction. This may result in a fluid imbalance. While you are in the physician’s office, surgical center or hospital, the staff will be monitoring you for signs of fluid imbalance. However, this may happen after you go home and can result in serious conditions such as heart problems, excess fluid collecting in the lungs, or kidney problems as your kidneys try to maintain fluid balance.
Toxicity from Anesthesia: Lidocaine, a drug that numbs the skin, is frequently used as a local anesthetic during liposuction. You may have had a similar drug, Novocaine, to numb your mouth at the dentist. Large volumes of liquid with lidocaine may be injected during liposuction. This may result in very high doses of lidocaine. The symptoms of this toxicity are lightheadedness, restlessness, drowsiness, tinnitis (a ringing in the ears), slurred speech, metallic taste in the mouth, numbness of the lips and tongue, shivering, muscle twitching and convulsions. Lidocaine toxicity may cause the heart to stop, resulting in death. In general, any type of anesthesia may cause complications and is always considered a risk during any surgery.
However, 99% of all cosmetic procedures when performed by certified surgeons in a reputable clinic are of great success and satisfaction for patients and doctors.
A- Less than you think. After years of being perceived as something only for the rich and famous, cosmetic surgery is now priced for everyone. Patients from all income brackets are now undergoing surgery. Please keep in mind not all patients are alike and some will require a slightly different operation than others. However, you will receive a specific price quotation upon your contact and request. Cosmeticharmony.com is more than happy to assist you with that.
Unfortunately most medical insurance providers do not cover procedures performed for cosmetic reasons. However, most surgeons do offer multiple financing options and many companies that finance cosmetic surgery exists. Cosmeticharmony.com provides information on various ways patients can fit buttock implants into their budget. For more information, simply click here
Buttock Liposculpture and all you need to know about Liposuction
A- Liposuction is the one of the most frequently performed cosmetic surgery procedures over the past ten years. Although liposuction is no substitute for dieting and exercise, it can improve body shape by removing resistant areas of unwanted fat with a tube and vacuum device.
Q-64 What is the difference between liposuction and liposculpture?
A- Liposuction is the removal of medium to large amounts of contour fat to reduce the peaks and mounds that portray a heavy and sloppy appearance. These include areas such as below the chin, upper arms, outer breasts, lower abdomen, flanks, hips, and thighs. Liposculpture is the removal of small to medium amounts of fat in rather normal to full areas to sharpen features, accentuate the muscles beneath and create a more cut appearance in the neck, lower cheeks, upper abdomen, outer buttocks, calves, and ankles.
Q-65 Who are good candidates for these procedures (buttock liposuctions and liposuction?
A- These procedures are for anyone who cannot obtain the trim and properly contoured look with diet and exercise, possess good skin elasticity and are not looking to lose large volumes of weight. Patients who exceed their body weight by 30%-50% may only be candidates for limited fat removal because of safety concerns and should undergo these procedures in stages. Patients who exceed their ideal weight well over 50% should seek other remedies for weight loss as an initial step and consult a physician experienced in weight management.
Q-66 Is liposculpture right for me?
A- If you’re thinking about liposuction it is essential that you have realistic expectations about what the procedure can do for you. It’s important to understand that, while liposuction can enhance your appearance and self-confidence, it won’t necessarily change your looks to match your ideal or cause other people to treat you differently. So before you decide to have surgery, please think carefully about your expectations and do not hesitate to ask our trained facilitators to call you in order to discuss thoroughly this matter.
The best candidates for liposuction are normal-weight people with firm, elastic skin who have pockets of excess fat in certain areas. You should be physically healthy and realistic in your expectations. Your age is not a major consideration; however, older patients may have diminished skin elasticity and may not achieve the same results as a younger patient with tighter skin.
Liposuction carries greater risk for individuals with medical problems such as diabetes, significant heart or lung disease, poor blood circulation, or those who have recently had surgery near the area to be contoured.
Q-67 Does the removal of fat tighten the skin as well?
A- Not exactly. In fact, some fat deposits on the body may be unforgiving to major fat removal and lead to more relaxation of the skin. Many new methods are being investigated in order to test their effect on skin contraction and tightening. Ultrasonic liposuction has been suggested as a stimulus to skin contraction. Some cosmetic surgeons are recommending the application of laser energy to the liposuction site. Unfortunately, it is the heat generated by these modalities that is believed to be the stimulus for the contraction process. If the heat of ultrasonic and laser energy combined with the rigors of the suction pressure is applied too aggressively near the skin, it can lead to serious skin injury. On the other hand, the use of the microcannulaes at less than 3.0 mm in diameter, if applied near the skin in selected areas, can help achieve contraction as the fat is removed with little risk.
Q-68 How do I decide whether to have Liposuction-Liposculpture, or Ultrasonic Liposuction?
A- The surgeon should review his experience with the various methods and analyze your body type. Some surgeons may advise ultrasonic liposuction for large volume extractions, especially in tough areas such as the back, flanks and hips. It was designed principally for the hard to extract deep fat and to reduce surgeon fatigue. External ultrasonic energy can be applied and is recommended by some surgeons before or after the fat is removed by regular liposuction. Ultrasonic liposuction must ordinarily be combined with traditional liposuction when deep and surface fat is being removed. This does add to the operating time or to the cost of the surgery and may offer no advantage for most surgeons. For gynecomastia (large breasts in the male), some experts advocate the sole use of ultrasonic liposuction but it should not be used aggressively near the nipple skin.
A- Liposuction is the most commonly performed plastic surgery in the United States. This technique is used to reshape the body by permanently removing localized fat deposits. Generally, the suctioning is performed in the low back above the buttocks, the back of the thigh just below the buttock fold or on the hip at the side of the buttock. The goal is to create a natural rounded curve to the buttock that recalls the look of the slim, well-proportioned athletic body.
The tendency to accumulate fatty deposits on the buttocks may be inherited, and these deposits are often resistant to diet and exercise. Many patients become discouraged at having lost unwanted pounds without seeing a significant change in this area. The overall proportions of the body may be unbalanced, and the extra bulk can keep clothes from fitting well. In these cases, liposuction can successfully trim excess fat to bring better balance and symmetry to the body.
Liposuction is not a weight loss technique, and is not a cure for overall obesity. It is, however, a great way to get rid of those bulges that you cannot seem to get rid of any other way. If’ you’re considering buttocks liposuction, the following information will provide you with a good introduction to the procedure.
A newly trim lower body can provide a psychological lift and an extra incentive to exercise regularly to maintain fitness. Many patients even find physical activity more pleasurable after shedding extra fat, and they also find that clothes tend to fit them better.
Q-70 What am I to expect after my surgery?
A- After surgery, you will likely experience some fluid drainage from the incisions. Small drainage tubes may be inserted beneath the skin for a couple of days to prevent fluid build-up. To control swelling and to help your skin better fit its new contours, you may be fitted with a snug elastic garment to wear over the treated area for a few weeks. Your doctor may also prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection. Don’t expect to look or feel great immediately after surgery. Although the newer techniques are believed to reduce some post-operative discomforts, you may still experience some pain, burning, swelling, bleeding and temporary numbness. Pain can be controlled with medications prescribed by your doctor, though you may still feel stiff and sore for a few days.
Q-71 Can Liposuction/Liposculpture be used instead of going on a diet?
A- Liposuction/Liposculpture is not a procedure for loosing weight, but is used for remodelling the body, eliminating accumulations of fat. The fat does not weigh very much and after a considerable aspiration you only lose a few kilograms.
Q-72 Is it better to go on a diet before having Liposuction/Liposculpture?
A- It is useless to go on an extenuating diet before having Liposuction, to then, perhaps, put on weight in the following months. We recommend that our clients have the surgery when they think they have reached the weight they can maintain. In most cases, however, after Liposuction, a series of psychological mechanisms are set in motion which lead clients to be more careful about the way they eat and in taking care of their bodies, so that in the months after surgery, they often experience weight loss and an improvement in their physical condition. These conditions boost the effect of the modeling and firming up of the tissue of the superficial Liposculpture giving a result which is often greater than expectations.
Q-73 How much weight can you lose with Liposuction/Liposculpture?
A- The scope of Liposuction is not the loss of weight but the remodeling of the body. It is, generally, carried out on two well defined areas and not on the entire body. It is not a drastic solution but a procedure which, if performed properly, involves very few risks with a gradual and not uncomfortable convalescence. Generally speaking, unless there is a wish to run unnecessary risks, during the course of the procedure, not more that 5-6 liters (liters, and not kilos because the fat weighs very little) is removed. It is ideal to have the surgery after a diet and, in any case, once you have reached the weight under which you do not wish to go.
Q-74 Can Mesotherapy eliminate cushions of fat?
A- Mesotherapy does not usually have any effect on cushions of fat. This type of treatment is none other than a way to convey trophic-effect medicines to fatty tissue. It may also have some effect on (lipodstrophy) but the therapy has to be followed with perseverance (it is never definitive), having it out together with a diet.
Q-75 Can Liposuction of the abdomen endanger a pregnancy in any way?
A- No. There are no problems in being pregnant after a Liposuction of the abdomen. The small scars are final but, if treated properly (correct suturing, massage, lymphatic drainage), they are usually not very evident.
Q-76 How long after giving birth can you undergo Cosmetic Surgery?
A- The time that should pass after a birth before undergoing Cosmetic Surgery varies and depends on both the kind of surgery and the general condition of the client which may be different according to the case. With regard to Liposuction, the procedure can be performed after 3 months if you are not breast feeding.
Q-77 In what period of the year is it best to have Liposculpture?
A- Even though the surgery can be performed at any time during the year, the cold months are to be preferred mainly because after the procedure the client should not be exposed to the sun for at least a month and because, when it is hot, it is uncomfortable to wear a compression garment. If these factors cause no problems, Liposuction/Liposculpture can also be performed during the summer.
Q-78 Many argue that a local anaesthetic is safer than a general (or total) anaesthetic. Why?
A- Local anaesthetic is safe if the dosage is not excessive. When the area to aspirate is extensive, the high doses of local anaesthetic required are toxic and may cause serious complications. In these cases, a general anaesthetic (by inhalation) guarantees the best results, reducing risks to a minimum. In any case now, after a few hours, in most cases, the client can return home.
Q-79 On what basis is the decision made to operate under local or general anaesthetic?
A- The decision depends mainly on the number of areas to be operated on, the amount of fat to be removed from each single area and on the weight of the client. The dose of anaesthetic that could be toxic varies, therefore, according to the case. Most procedures (of a small or medium entity) can, nevertheless, be performed in day hospital under local anaesthetic with sedation. If the fat to be removed is over 2.5 litres, the advisability of operating under general anaesthetic will be considered.
Q-80 Some argue that to obtain good results, Liposuction/Liposculpture should be performed under local anaesthetic with the client in a standing position so that the fatty cells to be removed can be seen better. Is this true?
A- The cosmetic surgeons in most clinics do not agree. With Liposuction/Liposculpture, it is not always possible to keep a client standing up: blood pressure tends to go down and they could faint. The surgeon must evaluate this. Furthermore, with advanced techniques like superficial Liposculpture, after the fat has been removed, if you are still on your feet, the skin appears to be sagging. The result looks terrible and completely different from that which will be the final outcome after the final modeling and compressive medication carried out by the surgeon.
Q-81 What is a local anaesthetic with sedation?
A- So-called sedation involves the intravenous administration of drugs which diminish or nullify the discomfort related to surgery. It involves substances that are anxiolytic (for reducing tension), hypnotic (for making you sleepy), analgesic (for killing pain). Finally, some substances induce amnesia (you do not remember almost anything about the surgery). If the client so wishes, it is, nonetheless, possible not to have any sedation.
Q-82 What is the difference between Liposuction, Liposculpture and Lipoaspiration?
A- Liposuction and Liposculpture are quasi synonyms. At present, for Liposculpture, we mean a Liposuction with a multiplanar approach which also includes superficial Liposuction and the use of fat for refilling sunken areas (Lipofilling or Lipostructure), to obtain a global remodeling of the areas to be treated.
Q-83 What are the possibilities of having Liposculpture on the calves and ankles?
A- Lipoaspiration of the calves and ankles is possible and, if the conditions are right, you can achieve good results; if the volume of the calves is caused by muscles and tendons or bones, very little can be done. Water retention is not a contraindication but, after the procedure, it may continue and, therefore, affect the validity of the end result. In this region, post-operative swelling lasts much longer than in the other areas. For this reason, it is advisable to have the surgery in the winter months and then have Lymphodrainage treatments.
Q-84 If you have problems with your circulation, can you still have Liposuction/Liposculpture?
A- Yes, the surgery can be performed in most cases with a good outcome, both aesthetically and physically. The type of surgery must, however, be analysed during the course of the preliminary consultation.
Q-85 Is it necessary to stop taking the pill before Liposuction?
A- It is advisable but not obligatory. Women who take the pill need to take a course of anticoagulant drugs (deriving from heparin), as preventive medicine, both before and after surgery.
Q-86 What are the percentages of risk with Liposuction/Liposculpture? Is it true that they are now considerably less?
A- The risks of Liposuction/Liposculpture in healthy people are those common to all surgical procedures (reactions to the anesthetic, infections, etc.) but complications are very rare. It is, however, necessary to operate with the proper precautions: suitable clinics, assistance with the anesthetic even in procedures performed under local anesthetic, the use of a general anesthetic in more extensive Liposuctions (giving too much anesthetic risks being toxic). The swelling technique and the use of fine cannulas guarantee the best results with very little bleeding.
Q-87 Isn’t there the risk that, where the fat has been removed, the excess skin will sag?
A- For this reason, the Cosmetic Surgery specialists in many clinics prefer Liposculpture, that is, superficial Liposuction which, apart from reducing the cushion of fat, increases the skin tone. Moreover, the surgeon has to take into account, at least generally, whether the skin will be elastic enough to adapt to its new condition
Q-88 What is Lymphodrainage?
A- Lymphodrainage is a special massage which aids in the re-absorption of pre- and post-operative swelling thereby speeding up recovery. It can also be performed, with a great many advantages, with the LPG – Endermologie method. It must be done by expert personnel who have taken special courses.
Q-89 After Liposuction/Liposculpture, is it indispensable to have Lymphodrainage?
A- Lymphodrainage speeds up recovery and the swelling goes down sooner. It is not indispensable, but it is, nonetheless, fundamental.
Q-90 After the surgery, do the areas operated on become painful? And, if so, after how long? Can you still walk and do gymnastics? How long afterwards?
A- The pain is usually bearable and can be alleviated with pain killers. It is subjective and varies according to the individual and the extent of the surgery. You can start walking immediately and resume sporting activities after 3 weeks according to your case and the kind of sport involved.
A- Since the normal aging process affects the firmness and elasticity of the skin, older patients may not achieve quite the same results as younger patients.
Buttocks liposuction is often performed in conjunction with a buttocks lift or with thigh liposuction.
A- Although liposuction is the most commonly performed cosmetic plastic surgery procedure in the United States, and the majority of these operations are successful, there are risks and limitations to the procedure, as with any surgery.
After surgery, some patients experience dimpling, lumpiness, numbness, scarring, discoloration, or sagging skin in the treated area. Follow-up surgery may be needed to correct these problems.
UAL liposuction may cause friction burns to the skin or to the internal organs.
More serious complications include blood clots, infection, excessive fluid loss leading to shock, fluid build-up in the lungs, and drug overdose. A combination of the following factors is associated with an increased risk of serious complications:
In order to minimize these risks, it is important that you follow all of your surgeon’s instructions, both before and after surgery.

If for some reason you are not able to make a decision, the physician will discuss the matter with the person you have assigned as your guardian.
You will be kept informed at all times and, if necessary, Cosmetic Harmony will offer you the possibility of asking for a second opinion from another professional. Although complications are rare they are possible and it is very important that you are aware of what they can be. We at Cosmetic Harmony strive to avoid any and all complications however in the event of something, please be rest assured that we will do everything possible to eliminate the complication to the best of our ability.
